When you think of the United States, you might think of freedom, standing tall, and green. All of these also describe our favorite torch-holding, iconic monument: the Statue of Liberty. Not only is this woman famous for her copper skin turning green, she also represents the linkage between France and America all those years ago. Well…the tables have turned. France, a European nation that once held our hand, has decided to take back the Statue of Liberty.
Why take her from us?
Emmanuel Macron, France’s current president, has taken the advice of the other European leaders to confiscate Lady Liberty. He says that we don’t deserve to have the symbol of enlightenment if we don’t even put potatoes, honey, and figs on our pizza! Not only is pizza a problem, but a protest has erupted towards the United States; there has been major disapproval of our country using condiments such as buffalo sauce, barbeque sauce, and ranch dressing.
When asked what they thought of this predicament, one student replied that “it’s weird because they gave it to us, so taking it back is odd.” Another student exclaims, “This is straight up wrong! They can’t do this ‘takesies-backsies’ game with this country!” One very angered girl exclaims that “I would steal their Eiffel Tower AND all of their famous statues!” Even staff are inquiring, “What will they do next? Take back the Louisiana purchase?”
Everyone at Wredling and across America is quite upset because the Statue of Liberty shouldn’t be fought over like two toddlers fighting over a toy car. Except this isn’t a toy-it’s a figure of freedom gifted to the stripes and stars nearly two hundred years ago.
France shouldn’t be allowed to do this! We have to grasp a tighter grip on Lady Liberty’s torch and never let go!
