The Percy Jackson fandom is buzzing with debate: which is better, the book series or the television series? While the books are the beloved originals, the show offers a visualization of Rick Riordan’s world. Is the made-for-screen adaptation better, or does it fall short? Both sides have their arguments. Whatever side you’re on, here is the evidence to support your opinion, or perhaps even change your mind.
The Lightning Thief
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is the legendary start to Rick Riordan’s novel series. While the show condenses the plot into merely eight episodes, it keeps infamous chapter titles like “I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher,” or “We Visit Auntie Em’s Gnome Emporium.” The show also has many iconic scenes, such as Annabeth’s classic line, “You drool in your sleep.”

However, the show did change a lot of other details. For example, in the show, The Fates appear near the St. Louis Arch, whereas in the book, Percy spots them on the side of the road while riding in a cab with Grover. Also, in the books, when Percy, Annabeth, and Grover go into the Lotus Casino, they do not know that it is a trap. On the other hand, in the show, they are completely aware that the lotus casino is a trap; the only reason they forget where they are is because of the lotus flower air scent, which was being pumped into the air.
Finally, one last major change came when Percy learns that his father is a god. In the novel, Percy isn’t aware that his father is a god until he is officially claimed by his father at camp. However, the show changes this reveal by having his mother, Sally Jackson, tell him when they are at their Montauk beach house.
The Sea of Monsters
The second book in the Percy Jackson series, The Sea of Monsters, spans 20 chapters, which the show managed to fit into the second season’s eight episodes. Let’s dive deeper into the similarities and differences between the book and the episodes.
In the first episode, “I Play Dodgeball With Cannibals,” the encounter with the giants is different. In the book, Percy and Tyson face them at school during a gym class. The monsters then start targeting Percy with their fire dodgeballs. In the show, Percy, Anabeth, and Tyson encounter the giants while crossing the border into Camp Half-Blood, and they attack, targeting all of them. However, despite the change of location, both the show and the books highlight the key fact that Tyson is fireproof.

Next, in the fifth episode of the sea of monsters, called We Check In to C.C.’s Spa & Resort, both the show and the book have the iconic Circe turning Percy into a guinea pig, and then Annabeth drops Hermes’ magical pills into the cage, turning Percy and all the other guinea pigs back to normal.
Another difference between the book and the show in episode eight, The Fleece Works Its Magic Too Well, Annabeth knows that the fleece can heal Thalia, and she was discussing this with Grover on the car ride home to camp; on the contrary, in the book, they only know that the fleece could heal thalia after they put it on thalia’s tree.
All things considered, the show and the movie have some notable differences, but the television series successfully brings many of the popular scenes from the books to life that fans were waiting for.

I really like the show because I personally thought the movies were terrible, but I also love the books, and I think the casting was better for the show than the movies, the actors were younger, and I thought Walker Scobell was AWESOME as Percy, the books were awesome but so was the show! I can’t decide!!!!
