You wake up in the morning and see snow falling outside. You check your phone, and the weather app warns of heavy accumulation heading into the morning. At school, students are anxiously waiting to find out if they’ll get the day off, while teachers scramble to send kids home with activities “just in case.”
It’s 7th hour when the principal’s voice comes over the intercom. She announces that school is cancelled tomorrow, and everyone starts to celebrate until she adds, “It’s an e-learning day!”
If you could choose, would you head back to the “old days” of a traditional snow day with no schoolwork? Or would you prefer the modern E-learning day?
Snow Day Pros & Cons

What is the one thing people dread about a snow day? For many, it’s the “summer tax”. You get the time off now, but when summer finally arrives, and you want to hang out with friends, enjoy the outdoors, or play video games, you’re stuck in a classroom for an extra day to make up that winter snow day. Another con is the weather itself; snow days happen in the dead of winter when it’s often too cold to stay outside for long, leaving you cooped up and bored.
On the other hand, what is not to love about a snow day? Many people look forward to having a chance to relax without worrying about school. You can sleep in, play video games, or do something else you enjoy. Another pro is that you don’t have to worry about doing schoolwork at home, and teachers don’t have to scramble at the last minute to create assignments for students.
E-learning day Pros & Cons
What makes an e-learning day worth it? One of the biggest benefits is that you don’t have to make up the day in the summer. Come June, you can sleep in later and hang out with your friends instead of waking up early to sit in a stuffy classroom. Some students also find that the independence of e-learning motivates them to get ahead of the class.
However, there are definite negatives. Many students dislike e-learning days because it feels like a lot of work, and they don’t want to do it at home. But if you think about it, you would still be doing that work at school and probably still have homework, so you really aren’t doing much more than usual. Another con is that if you have a question, you can’t just raise your hand and get an answer right away. That might discourage some students from asking for help.
So, what do you prefer? Would you rather stay home, keep up with your studies, and save your summer days? Or would you prefer a traditional snow day filled with video games and relaxation, even if it means staying in school longer in June?

I never heard of the ‘Snow Day Tax’, but that is an excellent way to think about it. I voted for E-learning, but if it was a REALLY awesome, snowy day, being outside is the best. Thanks for your Opinion article Asher!
