The White Rhinos are a nearly threatened species. Sadly, the northern white rhino is one of the most endangered species in the world. To prevent the subspecies from going extinct, conservationists are working on techniques to create new northern white rhino embryos. Unfortunately, Lions and Tigers hunt these Rhinos.
The main threat to rhinos is humans, as we continue to destroy their natural habitats. Scientists believe the northern white rhino might still be saved through advanced reproductive technologies, like in vitro fertilization (IVF), using stored genetic material and southern white rhinos as surrogates.
Right now, only two female northern white rhinos remain in the wild. Zoos are working to protect these last individuals and hopefully use them to rebuild the population. Thankfully, in 2023, white rhino populations began to show signs of recovery. However, they are still endangered, with only about 15,752 left in the world.
