You may have wondered if Wredlings famed mascot is a real animal, and it is! The Red-Shouldered Hawk lives in Illinois all year around and eats mammals. They use an aerial dive to hunt their food, whereas us humans use the finger to mouth method, eating our prey (chips and soda) in record time. These hawks are seen around big forests and bodies of water. You can easily identify these birds by their red or peach stomach and banded tail.
Luckily, no one is concerned about the survival of these hawks, unlike around “28 percent” (says the IUCN Red List) of species, these birds are not endangered. So next time you see Wredlings famed mascot or a band-tailed bird flying in the sky you will know exactly what it is! Go, RedHawks!
