Zombie Chickens

Meet the only real-life “zombies”! The Zombie chicken is a unique mix of the Leghorn and Ayam Cemani breeds. They earned the nickname “Zombie” chicken because of their purple-colored faces. These striking chickens have become a popular choice for backyard flocks, and I had a Zombie chicken of my own named Spooky. I really enjoyed Spooky’s variety of colors; she had white feathers with some black ones scattered throughout, and that zombie-like purple face. 

From my experience, I learned that Zombie chickens are strong leaders of the coop. At first, I didn’t expect Spooky to be a leader, as she looked too skinny compared to the others.  But she proved me wrong. Another thing I did not expect was the color of her eggs. I had fallen for some online rumors that proved to be a myth. Many people claimed that these chickens lay black eggs, like a pure Ayam Cemani, so it took me by surprise when Spooky started laying very light brown eggs. Zombie chickens are incredibly loud chickens. In fact, Spooky enjoyed screaming just for fun.

My flock consists of six chickens, all different breeds, and every one of them looked up to Spooky, like she was their leader. Sadly, Spooky was recently killed by a hawk. Her passing meant that my flock needed a new head of the household. So one of my other chickens, Buffy, a Buff Orpington, took that role. She appointed her best friend, Raven, a black Australorp, as her second in command.

You might be wondering why my chicken coop seems like a tyranny, but in the bird world, it is called the “pecking order”. The strongest chickens take control, and the weaker ones stay at the bottom. It’s a complete turnaround for Buffy and Raven (the new leaders), who used to be the youngest, lowest-ranking members of the group.
