When it comes to candy, everyone looooooves it (and if you disagree… GET OUT!!! Just kidding- you can absolutely share your thoughts respectfully in the comments). We’re diving into the most popular candies! And if there’s one you think we have to add because it’s just SO GOOD, tell us in the comments!
Reese’s Peanut Butter
Did you know that factory machines for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups can produce around 800 pairs per minute? Reese’s Pieces and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are clearly two of the most popular candies out there. Whether it’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with their chocolate-covered peanut butter-centered goodness, or Reese’s Pieces, the mini M&M-sized candy, with its peanut butter center and chocolate shell, both are soooooooooo good. No wonder so many rank them as the number one candy. Now for the interesting stuff. Who made Reese’s? How long do they take to make? Why are they called Reese’s? And even more fun facts. First, did you know that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups used to be called Penny Cups? That’s because at the time, they cost only one cent. Also, did you know that Reese’s slogan is “Not Sorry”? They say this because they’re not sorry about making you suddenly crave a Reese’s. Here is another fun fact. It takes 30 to 60 minutes to make a single Reese’s peanut butter cup. That’s way longer than you’d think, but compared to Skittles, it’s actually a pretty short amount of time. And finally, the creator of Reese’s, M. B. Reese, was a former dairy farmer and employee at The Hershey Company. He created Reese’s in his basement to create an innovative new chocolate and support his large family.
Kit Kat
The one! The only! The wafery! The chocolaty! IT’S…(drumroll!) Kit Kat!!! Kit Kats are consistently ranked among the top ten most popular candies in the world! They were originally created by the British confectionery company Rowntree’s in the 1930s. Their vision was to create a chocolate bar that could be eaten on the go, which led to the creation of the Kit Kat. In 1935, a delicious treat called “Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp” hit the shelves in stores all over the United Kingdom. Fast forward to now, and we all know and love it as the Kit Kat. Kit Kats only take 6 minutes to bake! But the rest of the process takes two to three hours! And of course, we can’t forget their iconic slogan: “Have a break, have a Kit Kat.” It was designed to make people think about the chocolate bar as the perfect little pause in the middle of a hectic day.
M&M’s
Mini, Mega, Peanut Butter, Carmel, Almond, and more! Can you guess what they are? M&M’s! Did you know that the white M on M&Ms used to be black? Or that they were given to soldiers during World War II because their candy shell kept the chocolate from melting too quickly? Here are some more facts: M&M’s were the first candy taken to space! Brown is the rarest M&M color! The name M&M’s came from the creator’s names that both started with M. They were created in 1941, in New Jersey. Believe it or not, one M&M takes at least 4 hours to make! And finally, the M&M store in London is one of the biggest candy stores in the world, with over 100 M&M selections to choose from!
Skittles
Okay, I think we’ve had enough of the chocolaty goodness of Reese’s, Kit Kat, and M&M’s. It’s time to get fruity! No more chocolate in this paragraph. RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU LIKE Skittles! Oh… wait, we can’t actually see you. If you happen to be in a random class right now and just raised your hand, and everyone looked at you like you’re crazy, just tell them you’re reading Wred Feather’s Favorite Candies article- they should understand.
Skittle Candy Experiment
Now, we could tell you all about where Skittles were made and who makes them, but let’s make it a little more interesting. Don’t worry, we’ll still hit the basics. First, does anyone know Skittles’ slogan? It’s… “Taste the Rainbow”! Try saying it in a mystical voice: Taste the rainbow! Did you know that one single Skittle takes 4-6 hours just to add its color? Take a moment to let that sink in. Another fun fact: one tiny Skittle is actually called a lentil! And perhaps the coolest fact- when you put a Skittle in water, not only does the color come off, but the little “s” on the candy peels off too and floats on top of the water.
As for the basics: Skittles were createdn the 1970s in the United Kingdom and were brought to the U.S. in 1979. Today, there are tons of Skittles varieties, like Original Fruit, Wild Berry, Tropical, Sour, Chocolate, and more. There are even different textures, like chewy Skittles! Thanks for diving into the sweet world of Skittles. Now, let’s get back to chocolate!
Sour Patch Kids
SOUR! SWEET! DELICIOUS! It’s Sour Patch Kids!! Originally called “Mars Men” in the 1970s, these candies have become a favorite sour-and-sweet treat for lots of people. The original flavors included lemon, orange, raspberry, and lime, but today, there are WAY more! What’s your favorite? While Blue Raspberry and Watermelon Sour Patch Kids are considered the most popular. The Sour Patch Kids motto says it all: Sour. Sweet. Gone. That’s exactly the experience you get when eating them- first they’re sour… can you guess what comes next? Then they’re sweet, and finally, they’re gone, hopefully leaving you totally satisfied with your candy choice.
Hershey’s Chocolate
Finally, it’s time for the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Here it is… the star of the show: Hershey’s CHOCOLATE!!! Some people say Hershey’s is boring (cough, cough, Jane), but I think it’s absolutely delicious.
Milton Hershey created Hershey’s chocolate in 1894 because he wanted to make milk chocolate affordable for everyone. Did you know that Hershey’s Kisses got their name because the machine used to make them made a kissing sound as the chocolate dropped? And here’s a wild fact- Hershey’s used to make soap! The soap was sold across the East Coast until the 1950s, when other uses for cocoa butter were found. Today, Hershey still produces cocoa butter soap, sold in Hershey-owned stores. Another crazy fact about Hershey’s is that Milton Hershey was supposed to be on the Titanic! He decided last minute not to go, and thank goodness he didn’t, or we wouldn’t have such amazing chocolate today.
Snickers
Presenting… the leader, the captain, the powerful, the amazing… Snickers!!! One of the top chocolate candies in the world! What makes them so popular? Their famous motto, “You’re not you, when you’re hungry,” their bittersweet candy namesake, and their delicious combination of flavors that keep chocolate lovers coming back for more.
But if you’re wondering, “What’s all the hype about?” keep reading! The motto shows that Snickers satisfies hunger, and the name comes from the Mars family’s horse, Snickers, who sadly passed away just before the candy was introduced. A Snickers bar is packed with nougat, caramel, peanuts, and milk chocolate- a combo that’s hard to resist. Released in 1930 in Chicago by the Mars family, Snickers continues to be recognized as one of the top chocolate bars and remains a favorite for many people around the world.
From chocolate to fruity, chewy to crunchy, long-lasting to quick, and sweet to sour, there’s a candy for everyone. We hope you enjoyed learning about these favorite candies! 🍫🍬🌈
