AI: For Better or Worse?

     AI, or artificial intelligence, is changing the way we live every day. Need help with homework? AI can help! Want to learn how to make Origami? AI can help with that, too! The possibilities seem endless. But every incredible tool has its downsides. So the question is: AI- for better or worse?

AI for Better:

Artificial Intelligence is loved by people all around the world. Tasks that might take you hours can be done by AI in just seconds! Here are a few reasons why so many people are excited about AI.

1. Efficiency: AI can generate answers in a matter of seconds and format them in a way that you can better understand. Things that take you hours to do, AI can do in seconds. Need help with studying for a test? AI can generate a practice quiz based on the topics covered in the test. There are countless more examples of what AI can do.

2. Reliability: AI can answer thousands of questions tirelessly while providing accurate and helpful responses. This makes it both dependable and easy to use.

3. Learning and Creativity: Along with being Efficient and Reliable, AI can also generate creativity and learning. Let’s say you wanted to make something, but didn’t know how. AI can generate tips and creative ideas to help you make what you want.

     There are countless reasons why people around the world love AI. Beyond everyday tasks, AI is also making improvements in fields like medicine—and even dentistry! Speaking of dentistry……Scroll down for an interview with local dentist Dr. Sharma.

Talking AI with Dr. Sharma

“Today, I’m joined by Dr. Nishu Sharma, a local dentist, who’s here to share how artificial intelligence is impacting her work- both positively and negatively.”

What is your opinion on AI? Explain.

     “Personally, I think that AI is a great tool since it makes a lot of things a lot more efficient and makes tasks easier. Honestly, I love AI.”

What are some uses of AI in your career?         

     “I am a Dentist and own my own business. We use AI for various tasks. For example, we now have something

called an AI receptionist, which allows us to take care of phone calls during off-hours, weekends, or even if our front desk is not currently available. Also, some of the admin work has been a lot easier and quicker since using AI. We have also found a company that can create and code some AI software to our needs. Another way we use AI is to diagnose problems. For example, we used to take time to read X-rays. Now using AI software, we have something called Cavity Detection AI Software. This program reads X-rays for us and tells us where cavities are located. All we have to do is double-check it.” (On the Right is an example of the cavity detection software)

In your opinion, does AI positively or negatively affect your career as a Dentist?

     “Well, so far, it is having more of a positive effect. Using AI we are having the ability to launch more advanced programs, we are able to respond to patients during off-hours with any questions they have. AI is also giving us a great marketing tool. It also does tasks much quicker. So far all the effects of using AI are very positive.”

     “However, some of the negative things in the long term which I have come to hear (not encountered), is that AI is causing a lot of job losses.”

In your opinion, out of all of the uses of AI in your business, which is the most significant?

     “Like I said before, using AI for marketing is one of the most important things.  Using AI for admin work is also very important.”

Is there any other use of AI in your business, or anything about AI you would like to talk about?

     “Yes. For example, sometimes we come across challenging cases. In the past we would have to rely on peer review, in which we had to ask colleagues on their review. However, with AI we are able to get answers to cases like these a lot easier. We are definitely going to expand our use of AI throughout the years.”

AI For Worse:

AI, like any other thing in this world, has a negative side, or as some might call it, a dark side… Below are some of the reasons why AI is disliked.

1. Loss of Jobs: AI is a great advancement, but one of the negatives is that it causes job losses. With the advancement of AI, AI is taking over jobs that were previously done by human beings. For example, receptionists are being replaced with AI responders.

2. Undermines Critical Thinking: AI is great, but it doesn’t allow for critical thinking. AI answers any question you have with one quick button. Any critical thinking you had is gone, since you will immediately know the answer.

     AI is changing the way we live every day. There are many positive opinions as well as negative ones. In the end, all of these questions lead us to one big question: “AI: For Better or Worse”
