This article is one of many shorter pieces, pondering what would happen in hypothetical situations. These are inspired by an article called “Everybody Jump” by Randall Munroe.
Imagine waking up to no governments, politics, presidents, taxes, or rules. One wouldn’t believe how the world has changed so fast. It sounds nice, though, not having to constantly be careful of everything one does, such as going above the speed limit and having to pay for everything. While it might benefit everyone in certain ways, it can also damage our society.
Without a government, people would potentially create small, self-run communities. Everyone in the town would participate in the new “government system” and have gatherings in the neighborhood instead of professional conferences. Since there are no rules, people will also be free to do anything they want, and they will be able to get away with it. This might also cause some chaos in communities, as two neighborhoods will not be able to decide on who should own an area, like a park. If there were laws, then people of both neighborhoods would probably go to the court and ask the judge what to do. Without a government, it would not be easy to resolve conflicts by following the rule of law.
Another thing about not having a government is that many people would not have jobs, since most of the countries in the world run on a government system. Many people also work for the government or have a job related to the government. This means that a lot of the population has to struggle without jobs. This will result in a higher rate of unemployment, and many people will have to compete for the same job, making it harder for everyone to find a job.
Lastly, if there is no government, then there is nobody to create the money. The concept of having no money is complicated because, technically, everyone can survive without money. Although money is vital for survival, money is just a form of payment to receive something else. Without this, everything can be considered “free”, with people taking advantage of the situation.
In conclusion, while it might seem like a good idea not to have a government, a government is essential for a well-functioning society. The government provides structure and order in society, without which there could be a lot of chaos and anarchy.

Love how this “what if” makes you think about how much structure we actually need to keep things running… Great food for thought!
