It’s 5th hour and you are sitting in your tutorial class. You realize you forgot your book at home, and next hour is ELA. And hopefully, that means time to read! So you make a pass and head to the LRC. Upon entering, you see students working on a project. You hear the 3D printers buzzing in the Makerspace. One lucky student is spinning the prize wheel. Did you know you could get prizes for reading at the LRC? Stick around for FIVE things you may or may not know about the Wredling library straight from Mrs. Cannon, your LRC Director!
1. Our LRC has a Makerspace for everyone to access. “This space allows our students to flex their creativity and bring learning to life in hands-on, authentic ways.” Mrs. Cannon emphasized that the space is equipped with a wide array of tools and resources designed to inspire innovation. Students can create 3D designs and submit them for printing. They can use the green screen and mics for video production. Or show off their artistic talents by making custom pin buttons. The Wredling Makerspace is an awesome outlet for students to unleash their creativity and bring their ideas to life!
2. There are all kinds of events at the Wredling LRC. Did you know that the Wredling LRC sometimes partners with St. Charles Public Library? According to Mrs. Cannon, “the goal is to welcome many different students to the library, make meaningful connections, and engage in fun, unique experiences.” A few of many events hosted in the LRC include- March Madness Sports Trivia, Valentine’s Day Hot Cocoa Bombs, Hispanic Heritage Celebration, President’s Day BINGO and a Clue LIVE mystery event. Mrs. Cannon encourages everyone to be on the lookout this December for a fun Holiday event with the SCPL!
3. The LRC provides a variety of fun ways to help students find books that match their interests! If you’re looking for a book, just ask, and our amazing LRC staff will gladly give you a recommendation. You can also explore the First Chapter Friday YouTube playlist for more ideas. Want a custom book list? Just fill out this form, and they’ll make one tailored to your reading preferences! And for fans of the Rebecca Caudill nominees, the LRC hosts Caudills and Cookies—a student book club where you’ll get a free book and cookies. Plus, you can check off Caudill books on your bookmark to spin the prize wheel!
4. The LRC hosts fun monthly and quarterly contests to get students involved! There have been so many exciting challenges in the past and more to come this year! So next time you go to the LRC be on the lookout for an amazing contest- you must just find yourself hunting for turkeys this November!
5. There is an outdoor reading nook with a waterfall pond! When you go to the LRC with your ELA class, grab a good book and read in the most beautiful place at Wredling! Teachers can reserve the space for their classes to enjoy, whether it’s during LRC time or just to get some fresh air and throw a ball around. Did you know this pond was created by students? In 2017, a club called Wredling Renovators partnered with a local company, Aquascapes, and spent the entire day digging and installing the pond which features a small waterfall. Later, Mr. Loversky added benches for students and staff to enjoy, completing the creation of the LRC outdoor space at Wredling.
Everywhere around the LRC, there’s a new space for students to hang out, access resources, and get set up for success—all while connecting with their peers! If you enjoyed this article, leave a comment or a like! Be sure to go explore some other features- there is something for everyone! I am sure many of Wredling’s students aren’t unaware of everything the LRC offers. This is a great article to highlight these offerings. The wide range of photos is awesome as well!
