Everyone wants you to read books. For example, your teachers. I bet that at least one of your teachers has reading every night for your homework. But why is that? Books are like the medicine for your brain. With reading, your vocabulary advances, your stress can be reduced, and according to a study by a group of researchers from Rush University Medical Center, “mentally stimulating activities” such as reading books can prevent the chance of getting dementia.
Books and reading have many positive effects on your mental and physical health. Such as…decreasing the risk of getting Alzheimer’s! This is a type of dementia that can negatively affect your mental functions and memory. According to a study in 2009, reading can also reduce your stress level to as high as 68%. That’s a lot less stress!
But, what if I don’t like reading? you may wonder. Well, I have a solution for you! Listening to audiobooks is also a fun, relaxing activity that has the same benefits as reading a physical book. An additional benefit is that you can do other things while listening. For example, if you’re doing something mindless, like folding clothes, listening to your favorite book’s audio version can make it more interesting.
If you ever want to do something fun, yet productive, reading is the thing for you. Keep in mind that everyone has different tastes in what they like to read. Some people love fantasy series, while others may enjoy reading a book about earth science. While reading can help your mental and physical health, it is also just a fun activity in general.
