Disney has created many amazing animated films, including Frozen, Moana, The Lion King, Toy Story, Zootopia, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs… the list goes on. These animated films are loved by fans across the world. However, there is one issue- many of these films are later remade, and fans are not always thrilled about it. According to IMDb ratings, the recent Snow White remake is rated only 1.4 stars out of 10. Some live-action remakes like Cinderella, Pinocchio (2022), and Beauty And The Beast have done well at the box office. As for Snow White, well, my feelings are the same as the critics.

Disney’s first animated feature film was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, released in 1937. It was groundbreaking for the time because it was the first full animated movie ever made. It was soon followed by Pinocchio. The animation process was astonishing because in the 20th century, animators had to create the animation frame by frame. Since animation runs around 24 frames per second, just think of how many individual drawings were required for just one minute of animation. Yeah, it’s quite a lot… over 1,400! You may wonder how animators created these visual masterpieces without computers and technology to assist them. Don’t you fret, though, that question is soon be answered.
Back then, animators used a technique callled cel animation, where each frame was carefully hand-drawn on transparent sheets called cels. Multiple cels were then layered on top of each other to create a scene. For efficiency, the background layer which shows where the story takes place would sometimes be copied. Animators would slightly alter each drawing from the one before to make it seem like characters and objects were moving. When played in sequence, these drawing would give the illusion of motion, and for viewers, the animated characters before them would come to life. This process was very repetitive and required many teams of animators to produce a finished film. When you think about it computer animation was a huge leap from cel animation!
Now, let’s get into the newest Snow White film, titled Snow White. Warning… SPOILER ALERT! This live-action movie is a recreation of Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. One positive aspect about the film is its music. Since it is a musical, this film features many great songs featured throughout. The catchy songs had a nice rhythm and beat. The plot develops and moves forward in the singing and dancing that is woven throughout scenes. Now, I realize while some people are fans of musicals, others are not. Despite this, Snow White’s soundtrack can be enjoyed by all with its nice lyrics and feel good vibes.

Another positive for Snow White is the actor who played the villain, The Evil Queen. She was the perfect woman for the part. She looked a lot like her, which made the live-action movie seem true to the original. Unfortunately, the rest of the acting, wasn’t as perfect as that of the Evil Queen. In some scenes, it seemed as if the actors weren’t giving it their all and it fell flat. And while I am no acting expert, shouldn’t performers step into the role they are playing, rather than just going through the motion? The costumes were also a bit confusing and didn’t seem to fit the time period of the movie. The film is set in medieval times, yet some outfits, especially those worn by the bandits, looked overly bright, oddly patterned, and even futuristic. The pieces just didn’t fit together. It’s understandable that the costume choices might be aimed at a younger audience, but they still felt off. Overall, there’s definitely a list of things that could be improved to make the film better.
There’s a big difference between Disney’s original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from 1937 and the 2025 live-action version. Hopefully, you’ve learned a bit about how Snow White has evolved over the past 88 years and why the newest version might be considered a flop. Of course, everyone has their own opinion, but overall, the original movie was a great success, while the remake fell short for many fans.

I haven’t seen the live-action Snow White, but I was curious why many people didn’t like it. Thank you for highlighting both the positive and negative aspects of the new Snow White movie. It was also interesting to read about the history of animation. Great article!
